Features & Benefits
The KVP FIP Pro™ test from the KVP Saf-T-Test Collection is a rapid, reliable, and cost-effective FIP test for cats, designed to help veterinarians differentiate between transudates and exudates in feline effusions. This simple visual test assists in supporting a diagnosis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)—a serious and often fatal disease. By adding the effusion sample to the acetic acid reaction tube, the feline FIP test reveals high protein content through visible teardrop-shaped precipitates, mists, or smears. In contrast, transudates dissolve completely in the solution, indicating a negative reaction.
The kit serves as a valuable screening tool when FIP is suspected, particularly in cats showing signs of the wet (effusive) form. It is best used alongside other diagnostics such as physical exam findings, imaging, cytology, and FIP blood tests to build a comprehensive diagnostic profile. This single-use cat FIP test is ideal for both in-clinic and mobile veterinary use—requiring no specialized equipment and delivering results in minutes.

How To
1. Prepare the Sample
Collect a small amount of ascites or pleural effusion from the cat using sterile technique.
2. Add the Sample
Using a dropper or pipette, add 3-5 drops of the effusion sample directly into the dye tube. Use dropper to mix well.
3. Open Reaction Tube
Remove the cap from the acetic acid reaction tube included in the kit. Add 1 drop of the dye-pleural effusion mix. Handle carefully—avoid skin or eye contact. DO NOT shake.
4. Observe Reaction Immediately
Let the tube sit undisturbed at room temperature while examining the solution for visible reaction.
Positive Reaction (Exudate): Teardrop-shaped precipitates, mist, or smears form.
Negative Reaction (Transudate): Solution remains a clear, light blue; sample dissolves completely.
Note: A positive reaction supports the possibility of FIP, but this is not a definitive diagnosis. Use in conjunction with other clinical findings and diagnostics (e.g., imaging, cytology, FIP blood test, PCR).
Dispose Safely: Discard used tubes and materials according to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and local regulations.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
The FIP Pro™ test helps differentiate transudates from exudates in feline effusion samples—supporting the diagnostic workup for suspected Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).
When a feline effusion sample is added to the provided acetic acid reaction tube, the test visually indicates protein levels:
Exudate (suggestive of FIP): Produces teardrop-shaped precipitates, mists, or smears
Transudate: Dissolves completely, indicating a negative result
The test uses feline effusion fluid, typically obtained from the thoracic or abdominal cavity.
Results are available within minutes, making this an efficient point-of-care diagnostic aid.
The test provides a visual cue of high-protein effusions, which may be consistent with effusive FIP. It is intended as a screening tool and should be used alongside other diagnostics like imaging, cytology, and FIP-specific blood tests.
No. While useful in assessing effusion type, the test is not definitive. It should be used as part of a comprehensive diagnostic profile, including physical exam, lab work, and imaging.
