Features & Benefits
The Pen-Type IV Cannula is a veterinary-specific catheter platform available in six gauge sizes — 14G, 16G, 18G, 20G, 22G, and 24G, giving your team a single, trusted product line for every patient and every clinical scenario.
Every size shares the same precision-engineered design: a double bevel needle tip ground to a sharper, more symmetrical cutting edge than standard bevels, reducing tissue trauma and improving first-pass success rates. The flashback chamber gives you immediate visual confirmation of vessel entry — no guessing, no second-pass attempts — while the easy-glide tab enables smooth, one-handed catheter advancement even in challenging field conditions.
The kink-resistant cannula maintains flow after placement, and the low-profile hub sits comfortably against the patient without catching on bandaging or cage material. Color-coded hubs across all seven sizes mean your team can identify and grab the correct gauge at a glance, even in emergencies. Radiopaque construction allows imaging verification of catheter position when needed.
- 14G: Large animal, rapid fluid resuscitation, blood transfusions
- 16G: Large dogs, large animal, high-volume fluid therapy
- 18G: Medium to large dogs, most IV medications and fluids
- 20G: Cats and small-to-medium dogs, general IV access
- 22G: Cats, small dogs, rabbits — routine fluid therapy
- 24G: Small exotics, neonates, cats with fragile veins

How To
- Select the needle based on patient size and therapeutic need.
- Clip and prep the catheter site per your aseptic technique protocol.
- Apply light tourniquet pressure proximal to the site to distend the vessel.
- Insert the needle at a 15–30° angle, bevel up, through skin toward the vessel.
- Advance until blood appears in the flashback chamber — confirm vessel entry.
- Lower the angle and advance 1–2 mm to ensure the cannula tip is in the lumen.
- Use the easy-glide tab to advance the cannula off the needle and into the vessel.
- Withdraw the needle while maintaining cannula position.
- Attach your IV line or adapter, flush with saline, and secure with appropriate bandaging.
- Document placement site, gauge, and date.
FAQ
A precision-ground double bevel creates a sharper, more symmetrical cutting edge that penetrates tissue with less resistance and causes less vessel wall trauma — reducing patient discomfort and hematoma risk.
Visual blood flashback confirms vessel entry before advancing the cannula, reducing the risk of perivascular placement — especially important in small or difficult-to-palpate veins.
Not routinely, but if a catheter is suspected of migration or embolism, radiopaque material allows imaging confirmation of catheter location — a valuable safety feature.
